As a student at UNT Dallas College of Law, you will be using several different software programs. The COL has chosen each of these with one primary consideration in mind: whether it will be helpful in the educational and professional development of our students. This page introduces you to each software program and how students at the COL will use it.
Canvas is a “learning management system” (or an “LMS”). You might already have used an LMS before, such as Blackboard or Moodle, in college. The COL has purchased and integrated Canvas into our course planning and teaching. Each COL student will be able to log into Canvas and access all the course sites and other sites in which the student is registered or has access. Student groups and organizations also will be able to create sites on Canvas. Depending on the professor, the course’s Canvas site will be used for handouts, videos and performance feedback, learning resources, discussion groups, uploading assignments, feedback on assignments, etc.
ExamSoft is testing and assessment software. Students at many law schools become familiar with ExamSoft in relation to the final exam, because one of ExamSoft’s earliest and most well-known features is its use as a secure method for delivering and taking exams. The COL also will use ExamSoft in “mapping” learning outcomes, assessing in relation to these outcomes, and giving students detailed feedback. Most graded assignments will be given through ExamSoft, including graded quizzes, mid-term, essay or writing assignments, and final exams.
Clio is a case management system. Almost all lawyers use some type of computerized case management system to organize their client files, maintain their calendars, and track the time that they spend on activities. Because the COL is preparing students with respect to practice-related proficiencies, we have partnered with Clio, a cloud-based case management system, to provide our students access to its case management system. To the extent possible, we want you to learn how to use the tools actually used by practicing lawyers. Thus, we will be adapting many aspects of case management, through Clio, to your legal studies.
Symplicity is career services management software, and is used by the great majority of law schools. Symplicity will be your primary portal relating to services and resources offered by the Office of Career and Professional Development.

Lynda.com is set up to be accessed through single sign-on for law students and faculty and staff. You must use the following link: Lynda.com. While you may have had an account at a previous school or employer, if this is the first time that you are accessing Lynda.com at UNT Dallas College of Law, please click the option that you have not previously had an account.
Procertas is a legal technology auditing system available to all UNT Dallas College of Law students after their first year. The system currently tests students on skills with MS Word, MS Excel, and PDF manipulation. More modules will be added in the future and may be utilized by UNT Dallas College of Law. Procertas is used with the Practice-Related Technology Competency Requirement at the UNT Dallas College of Law.
