Immediately after joining the law school’s inaugural class, John VanBuskirk dedicated his time to pro bono work, volunteering at Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas and four veterans’ clinics. By the end of his 1L year, Mr. VanBuskirk had earned over 150 volunteer hours. During his summer internship in the 191st Civil District Court, he witnessed one of the first same sex marriages in Dallas County after the United States Supreme Court issued its ruling on marriage equality. He also attended the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair, where he interviewed for and obtained an opportunity to intern for a Public Defender’s office in North Carolina during the summer following his 2L year.
Mr. VanBuskirk is the recipient of the Equal Justice Works Regional Public Interest Law Student Award, the Texas Access to Justice Law Student Pro Bono Award, the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program Outstanding Support Volunteer of the Year Award, and the UNT Dallas College of Law Texas State Senator Royce West Public Service Award.
Mr. VanBuskirk is currently a volunteer attorney with the Dallas County Public Defender’s Office.
