Canvas Learning Management System

UNT Dallas College of Law students will be using the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), an online course management service similar to Blackboard and other services you may be familiar with from prior studies.


You can learn about Canvas through the resource links provided below and become familiar with common terms, features, and other information you may need to have a successful online learning experience.

For questions about using Canvas—for instance, if you can’t figure out how to upload a document, or a quiz or assignment is not showing up where you think it should—then you should do the following:

  • First, check the “Canvas Guides” to see if they cover the topic. These are short, informative guides to particular topics. Here is the link to the Canvas Guides for students
  • Second, if you can’t find the answer in the Canvas Guides, click on the "Help" icon in the left hand sidebar in Canvas.


Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, or any other device* with a modern web browser.


Supported desktop browsers include the last two versions of:

  • Internet Explorer
  • Chrome
  • Safari
  • Firefox


Canvas requires the following browser components:

  • Flash is required for media recording, streaming, viewing, and uploading.
  • The Java plug-in is required for several features in Canvas.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view documents in your browser.

Computer Hardware Requirements

You are required to have use of a computer system with the following specifications and components. The requirments apply to both Mac and PC.

  • 2.1 GHz or faster processor
  • 4 GB RAM minimum, 8 GB or greater recommended
  • Hard drive with at least 15 GB free space
  • Windows 7 or higher(8 and 8.1 are not recommended), or OS X 10.11(Mac) or higher (server versions and virtual machines will not work)
  • Wireless networking ability
  • Sound card with speakers
  • Computer microphone
  • Web camera capable of video web conferencing
  • Administrator level account access
  • Screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher

Mobile Devices

While Canvas is supported on Android and iOS mobile devices, it is optimized for desktop and laptop displays. Since Canvas uses flash, certain features may not be available to you on your mobile device. Using your desktop or laptop to submit assignments, discussion posts, and take quizzes is highly recommended.
